Castles

Fortified defensive structures that were built since the Middle Ages as the residences of rulers, knights and aristocrats. They were both administrative centers and shelters in times of war. They were most often built on hills or near rivers to increase their strategic importance. Characteristic elements of castles were defensive walls, watchtowers, gates and a moat, and inside there was the owner's residence, a chapel and farm buildings.
